The Wallace High School Under 13XI played RBAI in the Bannister Bowl and the Lisburn boys expected a tough game against the traditionally strong Inst side. Wallace were also missing three key players through holiday and injury – goalkeeper Richard McNeilly, Gareth Campbell and Daryll Holland.
Despite this, they produced an inspired performance at Queen’s to win 5 – 0 and progress through ot the next stage of the competition. Indeed the scoreline could have been even more emphatic but for an excellent performance from the RBAI keeper. For the record, the Wallace scorers were Richard Arneill, Peter Macdonnell(2) and Stephen Hunter (2).
Special mention must go to left back Chris Cousins and centre half Jonathan Dunn who both had excellent games. Adam McCann was also a constant threat from left midfield.
Wallace’s Under 14s played Banbridge High School in the Ferris Cup. They too expected a tough time against a school from the traditionally strong Banbridge area. However the Wallace boys gave an accomplished performance to win 5 – 0, with a hat trick from Daniel Buser and two from the impressive Darryl Holland on his Under 14 debut.
This side seems to be peaking just at the right time for their cup journey. They are due to play MCB in the next round and are hopeful of progressing having defeated these opponents in September.
Wallace’s First XI entertained the touring Loreto College from Edinburgh. This match was always going to be a tough test for the home side as the Wallace lads had been defeated by Loreto 5 – 1 whilst on tour last year. Top Wallace scorer Rory McCann was also missing from the squad. The Wallace coaches used the game to give fourth years Stephen Doherty and Patrick Keery their First XI debuts.
It was however old hand Richard McConkey who opened the scoreline for Wallace and despite conceding a quick equalizer , Jamie Brown put Wallace 2 -1 up at the break. Chris Henry scored an excellent third for Wallace with a deft deflection from a McConkey cross and despite conceding a late goal Wallace ran out 3- 2 victors.
Exciting times for boys’ hockey in Wallace with the U13, 14 and 15 teams all safely through to the next round of their competitions . Hopefully one or more of these talented sides will be able to bring home the silverware to Clonevin Park in the coming weeks.
The Wallace High School would like to congratulate fifth year pupil Rory McCann who helped the Ulster Under 16 team to victory in the Interprovincials. Rory scored the first goal in the tournament for Ulster.
