Forty Wallace High School students recently said Auf Wiedersehen to Lisburn to spend an exciting five days in Berlin. The teenagers, who are all studying German at Key Stages Three and Four, took every opportunity whilst in the stunning capital city to develop their language skills. Cultural highlights of the tour included visits to the famous TV tower and Checkpoint Charlie museum whilst sports fans enjoyed a trip to the impressive Olympic stadium.
Undoubtedly the most poignant part of the trip was the moving visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration camp. Yr 12 pupil Beth Doherty explained,“I am studying History GCSE and the visit to the concentration camp really brought home to me the horrors of the Third Reich. History certainly came alive through seeing places like Checkpoint Charlie.”
Yr 10 pupil Stuart Quigg added,“I loved every second of the trip and can’t believe how much my German improved over the five days. The highlight for me was the Fat Tire Bike Tour which saw us all cycle around Berlin. I can’t wait to study GCSE German next year”
Tour organiser Miss Kerrie Ferguson concluded, “Our pupils were a credit to the school and their exemplary behaviour was commended everywhere they went. They were true ambassadors for the city of Lisburn. I’d like to thank my colleagues Ruth Logan, Paul Beaton and Michael Lowry for all their hard work in making the tour such a success.
