Wallace High School continues to be at the forefront of ICT developments, following their success as a pilot school for C2K, the province wide computer initiative for schools. The Clonevin Park school is currently part of a cluster group of pioneering schools taking part in the Department of Education’s Empowering Schools project, “Entitled to Succeed”
Bernard McCloskey, Head of Education at the Northern Ireland film and Televison Commission, this week spent time training Wallace’s “e-learning” committee, introducing the staff to the concept of “Moving Image as Text”. Wallace staff and pupils then produced a series of short films.
One of these videos will help launch the school’s new “my card” system. The digital video will explain how the smartcard service can be used in the school canteen, both school and local libraries and the local Leisureplex.
ICT Co-ordinator David Cleland explained, “This video will ensure the smooth transition to a cash free system and I would encourage all our pupils and their parents to visit the web site. The age of digital video will provide many opportunities for teaching and learning. Our portfolio already includes a video of the recent rugby tour to South Africa as well as an interview with actor James Nesbitt.”
In another exciting development at the school, A Level Computing pupils as well as members of the school’s popular Computer Club have been building their own computers.
Lower Sixth pupil Janine Davis explained, “Learning to build a computer from scratch has been great fun and really helped me understand how they work.” This innovation follows on from the installation of data projectors in 99% of classrooms.
David Cleland concluded, “This year is shaping up to be another exciting one in the school’s ICT provision. We are very much looking forward to continuing our work with the “Empowering Schools” programme.”
