Earlier this term a group of Wallace High School Sixth Years taught a series of short lessons to puils on P 1 – 7 of Harmony Hill, as part of Wallace ‘s programme of events to mark European Day of Languages. This was met with such overwhelming enthusiasm that a weekly Spanish Club was set up, with Harmony Hill Principal Mr Greer kindly allowing four Wallace High Upper Sixth pupils to come along on Wednesday afternoons to work with his Primary Six and Seven pupils,
The Wallace students, Nikita Thompson, Laura McAleer, Nikki Bell and Cherith Thompson, who are all studying Spanish at A2 level, volunteered to devise a programme of activities for the Club which would be both challenging and relevant to their young pupils.
Nikki explained, “We have spent time teaching the basics of Spanish including colours , numbers and animals as well as giving a brief introduction to Spanish culture, focusing on Christmas traditions. ” Nikita Thompson went on, ” We’ve been really impressed by the linguistic ability of the Harmony Hill pupils as well as their enthusiasm during all our lessons. I have applied to study Spanish at University next year with a view to becoming a teacher…this experience has been invaluable for me.”
Head of Modern Language at Wallace, Miss Pam Brown, commented, ” This has been a great learning experience for our pupils. THey have had the opportunity to develop their communication and organisational skills as well as their creativity. We’ d like to thank Mr Greer and his staff for allowing the Club to develop and we’d be very keen to implement further projects in the future , perhaps with the other languages we have on offer here at Wallace.”
