10304.gifSophie Kirk, of Wallace High School, Lisburn, Co. Antrim, has won the overall prize in a national schools’ art competition organised by the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish), featuring funky fish characters LL Cool Cod and the Seafish Squad.

Sophie’s funky new Squad member, Lingo, the underwater 60s retro mop top ling, demonstrates an abundance of creativity and innovation which is why Sophie’s design was chosen ahead of the other 5000 young hopefuls from across the UK.

Sophie has bagged a wealth of prizes including a fantastic Wet’n’Wild 35 underwater camera. She will also have her entry turned into a screensaver as well as having Lingo drawn and framed by a professional cartoonist. Sophie’s school will receive a Revelation Natural Art animation software package and a DSC-P8 Cyber-shot digital camera.

Cartoon characters LL Cool Cod, the Rappin,’ Cool Talkin,’ Streetwise Codfather, and his gang members are part of the campaign, launched during Seafood Week (3 -10 October 2003) to encourage children to become more aware of the seafood available in the UK. Lingo will join the Squad, who will go on to feature on a range of promotional materials for children.

Mandy Queen, Seafish Consumer Communications Manager, says: “The Seafish Squad art promotion is part of major campaign we have initiated in order to reach a younger audience and highlight the benefits of eating seafood. 2004 will see the campaign expanding and developing and the great response to the art competition shows that children are interested in seafood and we hope to build upon that.”

Marketing Manager of Northern Ireland Seafood, Jacquie Mooney, expressed her delight that a local pupil had won the competition, “I think it is wonderful to see such talent in the Province and a keen interest in seafood amongst our local students. Sophie should be proud that her creation – Lingo will now be used to encourage other pupils to focus on the health benefits of eating seafood. Well done Sophie!”
