Wallace Prep Celebrates Walk to School Week

The Wallace High School Preparatory Department took part in a “Walking Bus” activity as part of their “Walk to School Week”. This was the first time the Prep pupils were able to take part in this activity and it was a great success.

Around 60 of school’s pupils, staff and parents met at Tesco car park on Thursday 24th May and walked the to the school. Mrs Latham, Head of Department proudly wore her high visibility vest and kept the children safe as they walked to school.

She explained “This a wonderful opportunity for the children to not only think about their health and well-being but also the difference walking can make to the environment. The pupils attending the Prep come from a wide range of areas and often come to school by car. This week we have been encouraging parents to park further away from school and walk their children to school. We have been delighted with the support for “Walk to School Week” by parents and guardians.”

The youngest walker was Joshua Marks, from the Pre-Prep who walked with his mum, brother and baby sister. A number of Primary Seven children also wore high visibility vests and the lead the way to school. The weather was glorious and many of the children said that they would like to take the “Walking Bus” every day!

Last year over 1 million children in over 4000 schools ditched the school run as part of Walk to School Week. This year, they are challenging classrooms to embark upon a virtual journey from Lands End to John O’Groats as Strider’s Walking Challenge.

In the Prep the children have also been earning points for each day that they walk to school, with some special prizes for those who have tried especially hard! On Friday we will total all the points of our special week up and see which class has risen to the challenge.

Many thanks to Mr Livingstone, acting Eco-Schools co-ordinator for organising such a successful week.
