Warm Wallace Welcome for Finnish Visitors

Written by | News

The pupils and staff of the Wallace High School were very pleased to welcome a small delegation of Finnish visitors to the school from the 6th to the 9th October. Ms Monica Storgård and Ms Anna-Lena Beckman from the Godby högstadieskola, Skolvägen on Aland Island (Finland) are participating in an Erasmus project called ‘1:1 together’. This project enabled them to visit schools in other European countries to study and learn more about teaching with iPads and we were honoured that they chose to visit us in Lisburn.

While the teachers in Godby högstadieskola have used the iPad since 2010, all their Year 7 pupils were given one this year. Having researched us on-line, Monica and Anna-Lena found articles about how we in Wallace have been using iPads since September 2011 on a much larger scale and, recognising that they had lots to learn about how to use this equipment effectively in the classroom, they approached the school to come and study how we utilise this new technology. They were particularly interested in finding out the rules and guidelines we had established for using the iPad, how we introduce iPads to pupils and their parents, our technical support arrangements and how we work with iPads in different subjects.

Monica and Anna-Lena spent a busy three days in school observing classes and meeting with teachers and were very appreciative of the hospitality they were shown. According to Monica and Anna-Lena, they enjoyed every minute of their visit and saw and learned a lot. Monica said how ‘It has been interesting to follow your work and to see what you do similarly to us at our school and also to learn what you do differently. You have a very nice school, with great pupils and positive and diligent staff. You are doing great work and are certainly in the fore front and on the right track’.
