Year 12 Art Trip

Written by | News

The sun had been shining for weeks now but needless to say the day the Year 12 art trip had been arranged, it was forecast to rain…….but we were not going to let it dampen our creative spirit!! Heading off on foot from school, to catch the train, the atmosphere was jolly and whilst waiting on the platform, a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ was sung to Ruth.

Once having arrived in Belfast, we walked the short journey through Botanical Gardens and into the Ulster museum. A busy atrium awaited as many other school class groups had arrived to view and avail of the many exhibitions the museum has to offer.

After a short walk around to determine potential drawing and sketching opportunities, pupils in small groups located themselves at a range of displays. Working with a variety of medium to create a range of detailed and skilful investigative studies, these included animals, shells, birds, jewellery as well as fashion garments.

Following our time spent at the Ulster Museum, we then briskly walked through the city, past Queens University as well as many other architectural and sculptural landmarks in and around Belfast City centre. Fortunately the weather had improved, therefore we had the opportunity to picnic outside in the glorious shadows of Belfast City Hall.

After lunch, we walked through the cathedral quarter of Belfast arriving at Belfast Print Workshop to view the present exhibition of print works by Lucy Turner. The curator James gave us a tour around the upper floors of the working print shops presently occupied by several local and international artists. The pupils really did find this a valuable experience as they stepped into; albeit briefly, the world of a practising artist surviving in the present challenging working climate!

Our trip came to a close as we walked back to the train station and then to school, but without a doubt the year 12 Art and Design pupils had a creative and invaluable experience at all the various ports of call!!
