The new floodlit, sand-dressed pitch is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland, modelled on the ‘smurf turf’, which was the preferred playing surface of the 2012 London Olympics hockey tournament.
Further investment is planned to continue over the coming 2 years to develop the sports facilities, providing a state of the art conditioning and fitness suite, as well as a standalone home/away changing areas, which will be accessible during evenings, weekends and school holiday periods.
In addition, a 4-court sports hall and 2 gymnasiums are also available for booking (please enquire here for information on these).
Commenting on the facility, Chief Executive of Sport Northern Ireland, Antoinette McKeown, said: “Sport Northern Ireland is delighted to have supported Wallace High School in funding the 2G hockey pitch. It is great to see that our investment of almost £245k is providing value for money and increased sporting opportunities for our young people. Facilities such as Wallace High School are vital in increasing the number of children and adults experiencing, enjoying and participating in sport and physical activity.”
Wallace High School is a progressive school and in order to enable us to continue developing the facilities and home grown abilities, we are seeking to form partnerships with individuals and local businesses through perimeter advertising. Your association with Wallace High School and hockey will certainly help to raise the profile of your organisation to a wide audience throughout the Lisburn area and travelling clubs.
From individuals to larger businesses, we welcome support at whatever level you feel is appropriate, and we are happy to discuss any sponsorship agreement which would be of mutual benefit.

Ulster Hockey have become regular users of this facility. The surface plays well; we have found the school good to work with; and we now use it as one of centres for developing talent.
– Stephen Watt, Ulster Hockey High Performance Manager
The new facility at Wallace High School is proving to be excellent for our boys training sessions. Our Academy boys from 7yrs of age to 11yrs are currently using the facility and are thoroughly enjoying doing so. Lisburn Youth would certainly be happy to bring more of our teams to the facility in future. The surface is quick and bounce relatively natural when comparing to grass. It helps the boys improve their touch and feel for the football and although it may primarily be made for hockey we can certainly recommend it for football and I am sure anyone else wanting to use the pitch for football will be more than happy with it. – Colin Caswell, Lisburn Youth FC
