Wallace High School has celebrated a significant achievement after reaching the Northern Ireland final of the prestigious BPW Public Speaking Competition, showcasing exceptional student talent, teamwork and oracy skills at the highest level.

Outstanding Teamwork and Preparation

The team impressed judges throughout the competition with their professionalism, confidence and thoughtful engagement with complex contemporary issues. Their success reflects months of dedication and careful preparation under the guidance of teacher Gillian Weir, who praised the students’ commitment and ambition.

Speaking after the final, Ms Weir said, “I am very proud of the talent and dedication of the team. It has been a pleasure to work with these students over recent months and I have been consistently impressed with the skills they displayed.” She also extended her thanks to parents for their ongoing support and to BPW Northern Ireland for organising what she described as “a challenging and inspiring competition.”

Exceptional Performances Across All Roles

The Wallace team demonstrated strength across all roles. Tilly, who served as Chairperson, was warm, engaging and confident, exercising skilful control over proceedings. Working alongside a speaker from Ballymena Academy, she chaired a discussion on the pertinent and demanding topic of young drivers. Tilly handled the complex issue seamlessly, ensuring a balanced, thoughtful and well-paced exchange that highlighted her maturity and leadership.

Sophie took on the role of Speaker, delivering a powerful and moving address entitled Hope. Her speech explored the issue of violence against women in Northern Ireland, combining outstanding research with sensitivity and moral clarity. Sophie challenged politicians and decision-makers to take a more active role in changing cultural attitudes, while maintaining a tone that was respectful, compelling and deeply reflective. Judges commended her ability to address such a difficult subject with confidence and empathy.

Heidi served as Expresser of Thanks, where her warmth and poise were particularly evident. Her remarks were thoughtful and sincere, and her ability to think on her feet was described as superb. Heidi’s performance stood out in a highly competitive field, and Wallace High School was delighted when she was crowned Northern Ireland champion in her category. Her success brought silverware home to Clonevin Park, marking a proud moment for the entire school community.

Reflecting on the experience, Chairperson Sophie commented, “It has been great fun and Mrs Weir has been inspirational in her work with us. I’m really glad I challenged myself to take part and I look forward to future competitions.” Her remarks captured the spirit of enthusiasm and personal growth that underpinned the team’s journey.

Celebrating Achievement and Looking Ahead

Gillian Weir added, “We in Wallace take every opportunity to promote oracy, from our Bar Mock efforts to pupil-centred charitable work. Competitions like BPW allow students to develop confidence, critical thinking and communication skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.”

The achievement of reaching the Northern Ireland final is a testament not only to individual excellence but also to Wallace High School’s ongoing commitment to nurturing articulate, informed and socially aware young people. The school community extends congratulations to all involved and looks forward to building on this success in future competitions.
