Wallace High School once again marked the European Day of Languages with an exciting and inspiring week of celebrations that brought the entire school community together. The annual event, organised by the Modern Languages Department, shone a light on the school’s cultural diversity and highlighted the vital importance of language learning in today’s interconnected world.

Assemblies
Each morning began with a special assembly led by Mrs Schumann, who spoke passionately about the many languages and cultures represented within Wallace High. She encouraged pupils to take pride in their linguistic heritage and to embrace the opportunities that come with learning another language. In her address, Mrs Schumann reminded everyone that being multilingual is not only an academic skill but also a key to understanding, empathy, and success in our global society.
Throughout the week, the competitive spirit was alive and well with the Whole-School EDL Quizizz Challenge. Pupils from all year groups took part enthusiastically, testing their knowledge of European languages, geography, and culture. The atmosphere was electric as classes battled for the top spot, and the winners from each year group were rewarded with special prizes for their efforts.
KS3 Mascot Competition
Another highlight of the celebration was the Junior Language Club Mascot Competition, open to all pupils in Key Stage 3. Students were invited to design a mascot that would represent the club and embody both the CORE values of Wallace High School as well as the importance of learning a language. Entries poured in, showcasing the creativity and enthusiasm of our younger linguists. The competition not only encouraged artistic talent but also deepened students’ understanding of what it means to be part of a culturally rich and inclusive school community.

Student Leadership in the Preparatory Department
Meanwhile, the Modern Language Mentors played a crucial role in bringing the joy of languages to the Preparatory Department. They hosted a special French-themed break, complete with music, conversation, and delicious French treats. The mentors delighted the younger pupils by performing songs and engaging with them in French, German, and Spanish. A special mention goes to the incredibly talented Pre-Prep teachers, who amazed everyone with their stunning Eiffel Tower creation—a true symbol of their creativity and enthusiasm for the occasion.

The week concluded in style on Friday, when the PTA and Modern Languages Department teamed up to host a delightful French Break for staff. Croissants, pastries, and pain au chocolat created a warm and festive atmosphere, allowing teachers to come together and celebrate the spirit of European languages.

The European Day of Languages celebrations were a wonderful reminder of how language brings people together and opens doors to new experiences. The Modern Languages Department is already looking ahead to the Languages Festival in February, where pupils will once again explore the beauty and importance of languages in even greater depth.
Reflections
Reflecting on a week of celebrations, Mrs C Schumann, Head of Modern Languages, stated:
“Language learning is a gateway to understanding the world and each other. At Wallace High School, we are proud to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures and languages that make up our school community. The European Day of Languages is more than just a celebration—it’s a chance to inspire curiosity, foster empathy, and encourage pupils to see themselves as global citizens. This year’s events showcased the creativity, enthusiasm, and talent of our students, from the Quizizz Challenge to the Mascot Competition. I was especially moved by the engagement of our younger learners and the dedication of our Modern Language Mentors. Language connects us, empowers us, and opens doors to new opportunities. I look forward to seeing our pupils continue to grow in confidence and passion as they explore the world through language.”
