Medallion and U14 Rugby Training Camp Success 2025

Written by | News, Sport

Over the Half Term break, the Medallion and U14 rugby squads travelled to County Kildare, Ireland, to participate in a three-day residential rugby training camp. The purpose of this camp was to develop the players’ technical and tactical understanding of the game, improve their physical conditioning, and strengthen team cohesion ahead of the upcoming season. The camp provided a unique opportunity for both squads to train in a professional environment, engage in new experiences, and build lasting friendships both on and off the field.

Medallion and U14 Programme

The programme for the three days was both challenging and rewarding. Across the camp, the players took part in four on-field pitch sessions, three strength and conditioning sessions, and two pool recovery sessions. Each of these sessions was carefully designed to enhance specific areas of performance. The pitch sessions focused on core rugby skills, game management, and positional awareness, while also encouraging players to make tactical decisions under pressure. The strength and conditioning sessions helped the players develop power, endurance, and resilience — all key attributes required for competitive rugby.

Recovery was also an important element of the programme. Following intense training blocks, the teams benefited from pool recovery sessions which aided muscle repair and ensured that the players were physically ready for the next day’s activities. In addition to the physical work, there were also off-field workshops and video analysis sessions that allowed players to reflect on their performances, learn from each other, and gain a deeper understanding of team strategy. These sessions provided valuable insights into how small improvements in decision-making, communication, and positioning can have a major impact on overall team performance.

Clongowes Wood College

The camp was hosted at Clongowes Wood College, one of Ireland’s most prestigious boarding schools, located in the heart of County Kildare. Clongowes has a rich rugby tradition and a strong reputation for producing high-calibre players who have gone on to represent Ireland at various levels. The college’s extensive facilities — including multiple rugby pitches, a modern gym, recovery pool, and classroom spaces — created an ideal environment for both training and learning.

Accommodation was provided within Clongowes’ boarding houses, offering the players a true experience of life in an elite rugby school setting. The catering was also exceptional, with the teams enjoying full-board meals that were both nutritious and plentiful — ensuring the players were well-fuelled for the demanding training schedule.

Beyond the training ground, there was a strong emphasis on team building and camaraderie. On the final evening, the squads visited Airtastic, where they took part in fun and competitive team activities such as ten-pin bowling and laser tag. This provided a well-deserved break from the intensity of training and allowed players to relax, enjoy themselves, and further strengthen the friendships that underpin successful teams.
Throughout the camp, the players displayed excellent attitudes, commitment, and enthusiasm. They trained with focus, supported one another, and demonstrated significant progress over the course of the three days. The experience also gave them a valuable insight into the discipline and dedication required to develop as athletes and as young men.

Reflections

The success of the camp would not have been possible without the hard work and support of staff. A huge thank you goes to Mr Suffern, Mr Hunter, Mr McCall, and Mr McIllmurray for their organisation, supervision, and coaching throughout the trip. Their expertise, encouragement, and attention to detail ensured that the players gained maximum benefit from the experience.

Finally, sincere thanks are extended to Clongowes Wood College for their warm hospitality and for providing such an inspiring setting for this year’s training camp. The facilities, accommodation, and overall environment contributed greatly to what was a memorable and productive few days.

The trip to Clongowes will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on both the Medallion and U14 squads. The players returned home with improved skills, stronger team bonds, and renewed confidence as they look ahead to the challenges of the season to come.

Following their return from the training camp Mr McIllmurray stated:

“The camp at Clongowes was a fantastic experience for our players. It challenged them physically and mentally, and the progress they made in just three days was remarkable. The camaraderie, commitment, and enthusiasm they showed throughout was a credit to them and bodes well for the season ahead.”
