Wallace High School has enjoyed an inspiring and action-packed week of public speaking achievements, with pupils across a wide range of year groups demonstrating confidence, eloquence and remarkable dedication. Three major competitions took place over the course of a few days, marking one of the busiest and most successful weeks the school has experienced in this vibrant area of extracurricular life.

Soroptimist International Public Speaking Competition

The week began with the Soroptimist International Public Speaking Competition, where four talented Year 12 pupils—Lucy, Elodie, Niamh and Kaitlyn—took to the stage to present speeches on a series of topical and thought-provoking issues. Each competitor delivered with poise and maturity well beyond their years, addressing themes that resonate deeply within today’s society. Their ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity and conviction earned high praise from the judges and audience alike. The school is immensely proud of their commitment, preparation and courage in stepping forward to represent Wallace High with such distinction. Thanks go to Mrs Harrison for accompanying students at the event.
BPW Public Speaking Competition
Hot on the heels of this event came the Belfast heat of the prestigious BPW (Business and Professional Women) Public Speaking Competition. Wallace High entered two Sixth Year teams, each bringing their own unique strengths to the platform. The team comprising Tilly, Sophie and Heidi impressed the judging panel with an articulate and engaging performance that combined sharp analysis with dynamic delivery. Their exceptional teamwork and clarity of argument secured them a well-deserved place in the Northern Ireland Final, which will take place in February. The school community is excited to support them as they prepare for the next stage of the competition.

The second Sixth Year team—Lauren, Zac and Aimee—also delivered outstanding performances. Their presentations were described as powerful, polished and deeply professional. The trio captivated audiences with their thoughtful approach and impressive public speaking skillset. Although they narrowly missed out on a final-stage placement, their achievement stands as a testament to their hard work, dedication and willingness to engage meaningfully with challenging topics. The school extends warm congratulations for their exceptional representation of Wallace High.
Poetry Aloud Competition

The week concluded with a memorable trip to Dublin for the Poetry Aloud semi-final, held in the historic surroundings of the National Library of Ireland. Accompanied by Mrs Weir, Year 9 pupil Sam and Year 11 pupil Nathan competed in the Junior and Intermediate categories respectively. Facing formidable competition from students across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the boys each performed two poems with striking passion, clarity and professionalism. Their delivery showcased not only their natural talent, but also the hours of preparation and reflection poured into perfecting their recitations.
The event also offered a cultural dimension, giving the pupils an invaluable opportunity to meet peers from across the island, share their love of literature, and enjoy some of Dublin’s famous sights. A particular highlight included sampling iconic Tayto crisps—an experience that added fun and flavour to an already unforgettable day!
The school is thrilled to announce that Nathan has earned a place in the Poetry Aloud Final, taking place in December. This remarkable achievement highlights his exceptional ability and the strength of the spoken word programme within the school.
