Wallace Clinch Irish Title

23406.jpgGirls form The Wallace High School joined teenagers from 37 schools from every province in Ireland last weekend to compete in the All–Ireland badminton Finals.The Finals took place in Gormanstown College in County Meath and saw 51 teams compete in what is the pinnacle of the school year’s badminton.

Wallace was well represented by their Minor and Junior Girls’ League teams.The Minor Girls’ team of Ashleigh Stephenson, Caitlin Dornan, Lynda Newell and Tessa Stewart entered theri final match of the tournament against Mercy Convent , Wexford with both teams having won 11 games.

This was a very close match and ended on three games apiece, leaving the chmpionship[ title to be decided on points. This again was remarkable close with Mercy Convent just pipping Wallace with 245 points to Wallace’s 229, leaving Wallace as very worthy runners up.

At Junior level, the Wallace team of Emma Calow, Caroline Davis, Ashleigh Davidson and Alison Topping defeated all the teams in their section to win the championships.

Co-ordinator of Girls’ badminton in the Clonevin Park School, mis Andrea Spiers, commented,”The Irish finals were a fitting end to another very successful year’s badminton here in Wallace.Congratulations to all our players who were excellent ambassadors for Ulster, with their standard of play very impressive. The commitment demonstrated by the players throughout the season has been superb.”
