The Wallace High School First XI produced a professional display of quality cricket on Wednesday to win the Ulster Bank Schools’ Cup in glorious sunshine at Lisburn Cricket Club.
Old rivals Friends’ School won the toss in perfect conditions and elected to bat. Greg Thompson (18) and Johnny Bell set about their task with speed as they scored quickly and at 28 off 4 overs were firmly in the driving seat.
However Wallace’s Ian Whitten and Richard McConkey produced an excellent display of bowling to take the game firmly away from Friends. Whitten firstly got Bell caught behind and Skipper McConkey produced an excellent delivery to have Thompson caught behind.
Whitten bowled three wicket maidens to nip the heat out of Friends’ batting. His figures of 7-4-18-4 were ably backed up by McConkey 7-3-17-2.
Gary Crowe 2-0-2-2 tidied up the tale and restricted FSL to 42 ALLOUT in 17 overs.
In reply Ali Nagfi (24 NOTOUT)and David Graham 18 (NOTOUT) brought Wallace to victory from 9.3 overs and gave Wallace their fourth First XI trophy in four years and second Schools’ Cup.
The Wallace High School First Xi won by 10 wickets.
