Last week Wallace High School celebrated European Day of Languages 2011 in style with a whole week of activities ranging from Ceili dancing to food tasting and much more!

Year 8 pupils were invited to a Spanish break and had great fun learning some food vocabulary and phrases and not to mention tasting some typical Spanish food! Year 9 pupils got into the swing of European Day of Languages by participating in an Irish set dancing lesson taught by professional set dancing teacher Maire Ni Bhruadair. Year 9 pupil, Connor Richardson thoroughly enjoyed his first taste of Ceili dancing, “I was unsure what to expect at first but Maire soon had us all at ease. I really enjoyed learning the ‘Waves of Tory’.”

In Year 10, pupils enjoyed an energetic salsa lesson from professional instructor Chris Scullion from Salsa NI. Year 11 students completed a European quiz and students in Years 13 and 14 participated in morning assemblies and taught French, German and Spanish lessons in Downshire Primary School. Their preparation and enthusiasm were described as ‘exemplary’ and the staff of the primary school were most impressed by their friendliness and excellent manners.

Head of Modern Languages, Alex Millar, is delighted with yet another successful celebration of European Day of Languages, “The pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the events on offer and we are already looking forward to European Day 2012.
