Barcelona Trip 2016

Forty two pupils and four staff from The Wallace High School returned from a thoroughly enjoyable educational tour to Barcelona at the start of the Easter holidays.
Despite several rainy days, the trip was a great success, offering the opportunity for the Clonevin Park students to fine-tune their Spanish skills and experience some of the cultural delights of this most popular Spanish city.

Highlights of the busy schedule included a guided coach tour of the city with stops at La Sagrada Familia, the Olympic Stadium, Montjuic and Gaudi’s famous Parc Güell before a late afternoon shopping trip on Las Ramblas on the first day, to help pupils gain a clear sense of all the city has to offer.

The inspirational Benedictine Monk retreat at Monserrat which offered the most spectacular mountain views of Catalunya was a memorable aspect of the second day, before a change in tempo with a lively visit to the world famous Nou Camp Stadium. Visits to Barcelona Aquarium and The House of Illusion were also fun and relaxing.

The last day saw the intrepid Wallace tourists sporting bright yellow ponchos as they braved the fantastic range of roller-coasters in Portaventura.

Year 11 student Kirsty Dawson commented: “Spending Friday morning at Monserrat and experiencing the spectacular views was my favourite part of the trip. I feel much more confident speaking Spanish now and feel I have a greater cultural understanding too.”

Fellow Year 11 pupil Rachel Scott added: “It was a fantastic experience, giving us the opportunity to develop new friendships and opportunities to practise our language skills in preparation for our GCSE speaking examinations. All the students would like to thank Miss Ferguson, Mrs Cherry, Mr Calvert and Mr Alexander for giving up their time to take us to Barcelona!”

Trip organiser Miss Kerrie Ferguson was understandably delighted with the success of the trip and concluded: “Our students were wonderful ambassadors for their school and city and I have no doubt that their linguistic talents will have improved following their time in Barcelona.”
